PanocularAI is a research-based spinoff idea from TU Darmstadt that aims to enable small-scale edge devices to run advanced AI systems with minimum energy consumption and real-time performance.
Edge devices (e.g., autonomous vehicles, robots, and smart cameras) are often constrained by their small form factor and limited weight. Therefore, they are usually equipped with lightweight chips and multiple sensors, including monocular cameras, to perceive the environment instantly. On the software side, various AI techniques such as object detection/tracking, semantic segmentation, and depth estimation usually need to run in parallel to enable effective perception. Existing solutions are often unreliable and require a large, bulky processor that does not easily fit into the end device, causing significant computing and energy costs.
As part of the disruptive innovation cycle and AI in processes, our vision is to enable advanced, reliable, and efficient AI even on small edge devices by significantly reducing implementation costs and removing technical and regulatory complexities that have hindered widespread adoption.
